Patriots Compete at State

The Patriots compete in the 4x800, 400 and 1600 at the state meet.

Bobby Toppins, Nick Williamson, Ryan Briggs and Kirk Chitwood will compete in the first event, the 4x800, on Friday at the State Meet. These four are present at the state meet due to heroic efforts by Nick, Drew Hackman, Andrew VanGenderen and T.J. Buchanan. While the situation at District was unpleasant for several of the top Pats, these four gutted out a qualifying position in the 4x800. The Sectional found Bobby, Ryan and Kirk joining Nick for the most exciting race of the day. Without Drew, Andrew and T.J., along with Nick, there are no heroics at Sectional. So here they all are and they possess a chance to battle one last time for the season. For Nick and Kirk, they end their careers as all athletes wish to end them; in the state championships. Kirk actually completes a circuit. He competed as a freshman in the state meet four years ago in the 4x800.

Fred returns to the state meet after a magnificent effort in last year's Sectional relays. This time he is all alone in the 400. On District day few were looking at the remarkable senior. Many expected a Patriot in the 400; just not this Patriot. Fred will compete in the 400 prelims and take his best shot to end on an all-state platform on Saturday.

Ben competes on Saturday in the 1600. Ben is a veteran on the state stage. The past two seasons he has earned all-state honors in the 3200. This will be his first foray into the 1600 at the state level. He will see many of the familiar faces that have appeared on the podium for all-state at both the cross country and the 3200 distances.
