ON THE SATURDAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Posted Saturday, December 21,2002, 7:26PM by Jim Schmuck
We
had the Royal Run. The Royal Run began in 1978. At the end of the 1978
cross country season Luis Guerra completed his sophomore year at South
and had competed for South in the state meet after running a great
qualifying time at Sioux Passage. For many years Luis was the freshman
mile record holder. After the first of the year in 1979 Luis moved to
Palatine, Illinois. His father was in the hotel business and he was
transferred to Chicago.
Teammate Mike King wished to do
something for Luis before he left and decided that he would organize a
run for him. Since Mike KING chose QUEENy Park for the run, it
naturally became the Royal Run. It has run non-stop since 1978. It has
never been abandoned, however, one year it was determined that the 60
degree below zero wind chill was more than we wished to challenge.
Originally,
the best sophomore was put in charge of organizing and hosting the
Royal Run. Past hosts included Mike King, Greg Fisher and Kirk
Anderson. In recent years, South alum and cross country coach Ted
Faulhaber has taken responsibility for the run.
This year's run
provided some of the best weather ever. Brian Fleming was the alum of
note. We also had excellent representation from the current athletes,
including Kevin, Raca, Brad, Ben, Kirk, Ramsey and John. Parents
included Dr. John, the Leichts and Ms. Spencer, and a brief appearance
from Mr. Chitwood.
The start of the race was a sight to behold,
but the end--ah, the end. I didn't really see the end so I have no idea
who the reigning Royal Run champion is.
To all, may you have a peaceful and loving holiday season!
ROYAL RUN SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20
Posted Wednesday, December 18,2002, 4:47PM by Jim Schmuck
This
Saturday is the annual Royal Run. The run will take place at 9:30 at
the usual site. For those who are new to the Royal Run or have slipped
into senility as they grow older as alums, it is in the back of Queeny
Park above the tennis courts.
All current students and alums,
along with their families, are welcome. We hope that Mike King makes
his annual visit and that we find a few new and not-so-new alums coming
back.
Last year's run saw Grant Doty, the Andersons and several others make an appearance. We look forward to seeing everyone.
JOHN MCDONNELL OF ARKANSAS IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Posted Sunday, December 15,2002, 2:24PM by Jim Schmuck
The
Missouri coaches' clinic was a great success. The highlight of the
clinic was University of Arkansas coach John McDonnell. Coach McDonnell
has won a number of NCAA championships in cross country and track. He
has coached dozens of All Americans and has coached the indoor mile
world record holder.
Coach McDonnell emphasized two primary
components to successful distance running. He maintains that good
distance runners must remain RELAXED and that they must constantly
improve their CONCENTRATION.
He also pointed out that his
athletes always race from the front. In fact, he stated that NOTHING
GOOD HAPPENS FROM THE BACK OF THE PACK. He utilizes a workout every
other week he refers to as the "oxygen debt running" to simulate race
conditions. This helps the runners learn to go out fast as they will
need to do later in big meets.
I asked him about the theory of
working from the middle of the pack or the back of the pack to the
front utilizing even pace method. He said that races don't occur that
way and that in big meets, athletes are not successful working from the
back.
Ask yourself, where are the Kenyans in a race?
West Plains strategy is also a front-runner mentality. They have often followed the Arkansas strategy of running from the front.
UPDATES
Posted Saturday, December 14,2002, 6:18PM by Craig Luciano.
Thanks
to alumn Mike Fussner for submitting the 89-90 and 92-93 team
cross-country pics. Sorry it took so long for me to get them up. The
89-90 shot features yours truly so you'll definitely want to check that
out ;-)
In addition to changing the look and feel of the site
which I mentioned earlier, Coach and I are also working on updating a
ton of the content. By the start of track season we'll have all the
history up to date. That section contains all the records and various
individual accomplishments.

MTCCCA CLINIC TO BE HELD ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
Posted Monday, December 9,2002, 4:26PM by Jim Schmuck
This
Friday and Saturday the annual MTCCCA coaches' clinic will be held at
Columbia, Missouri. The keynote speaker will be John McDonnell from the
University of Arkansas. Coach McDonnell has produced over a dozen
national championship cross country and track teams in the past several
years. The Razorbacks finished 6th in the most recent cross country
national championships.
Also speaking from the St. Louis area
will be Mr. Kent Bohling, St. Louis Running Center, on shoe selection
for distance athletes. Mary Wallis, of Improved Performance, will speak
on injury prevention and injury rehabilition through massage therapy.
Washington
University coaches, Steve Rubin and Russ Braudrick, will discuss field
events. Scott Brandon, Lafayette, will talk on the 1600 and the 3200
meter runs. Stan Nelson, Northwest High School, will discuss the high
jump.
Coach Nelson will also be inducted into the Missouri
Coaches Hall of Fame. Other St. Louis area inductees include Paul Enke,
longtime Hazelwood Central coach and now cross country coach at Fort
Zumwalt South; Ed Schneider, current Truman State coach. Coach
Schneider is a graduate of Jennings High School and former Riverview
Gardens High School coach in the 1970's.

Thanks to all the parents that chipped in for the Applebee's gift certificate. We'll be chowing down tonight with it!
I
really enjoyed creating this site and I like maintaining it too. I am
working on a MAJOR upgrade which I'd like to emplement by the beginning
of track season. I'll keep everyone informed of the progress. I'll most
likely put up a test site for a little while and take comments.

First
and foremost, thank you for the lovely gifts. I will use all of them,
including the forecasting 8-ball and the peanut butter. I enjoy last
year's calendar every day and am exceedingly grateful for this new one.
I appreciated your kind words and my wife appreciated the "power
behind..." comments. God Bless All.
Now, the most valuable awards were voted on by the entire team and announced at the banquet. Here is a review of those awards:
Best
Freshman-Ben Brammeier/Kirk Chitwood. There is evidence that it will
take most of the remaining year for the two freshmen to figure out how
to share the plaque.
Best Sophomore-John Leicht
Best Junior-Brad Kuntzman
Best Senior-Tim Levine
Most Improved-Karthik Ponnusamy
Most Valuable-Kevin John
Congratulations to these special award winners and to all of the letter-award winners.
Enjoy
your off-season, but do your work. The way to improve is completely
within your own control. The time to set achievable goals is at the
same time you are willing to begin to work toward those goals.
Have a good, safe and happy Thanksgiving.

SECTIONAL TIMES AND KUDOS TO CRAIG LUCIANO
Posted Monday, November 18,2002, 10:57AM by Jim Schmuck
Mrs.
Horton pointed out that I had forgotten to post Sectional times. They
are now posted. She also paid compliment to Craig Luciano for all of
his hard work on this site.
SECTIONAL TIMES
Posted Monday, November 18,2002, 10:57AM by Jim Schmuck
Mrs.
Horton called this morning to let me know that I had forgotten to enter
Sectional times. It slipped by me somehow. Here they are below.
She
also called to commend Craig Luciano for his work with this website.
She is correct in saying that this website has added a tremendous
amount to South cross country. It was intended to keep our alums
informed first, since most cross country is not included in any
newspapers. The second purpose was to provide information and coverage
of our team to our team. A third purpose evolved and that was to
provide information and coverage to parents and friends of South cross
country.
None of this would have been possible, or even
thought of, without Craig. The success of this site for our alums has
grown beyond our wildest dreams. We have heard from alums in San Diego,
Spain, Germany and around the midwest. We have heard from alums who are
older than the parents we now serve. Sorry, I didn't mean that in a
harsh way. Without this site, none of that would have been possible.

A STATE ANALYSIS
Posted Monday, November 18,2002, 9:11AM by Jim Schmuck
The
state results illustrate some interesting qualities about cross country
in the different regions of Missouri. Kansas City has declared that the
best cross country exists in that region. From a depth perspective,
that claim appears true. They do not possess the best team in the
state, but they do possess several of the best teams.
West
Plains continues to dominate the sport. Coach Dixon is next to none in
this state for coaching skill. His successes in all areas of cross
country speak for themselves. Early this season there were arguments
that West Plains feared Liberty. The state results put that argument to
rest. The Zizzers were just good enough to defeat a great Liberty squad.
After
West Plains, there is good reason to suggest that KC holds the greatest
depth in the state. Arguably the best individual from St. Louis may be
Billy Bell of Central or Tony Payton from Eureka. Bell was the top St.
Louis finisher at the state meet. Payton, next, was the Sectional
champion and his 16:32 at Jefferson Barracks was the fastest time this
year by a St. Louis area athlete. That said, Bell or Payton would have
been West Plains' fourth man. Either would have been Liberty's third
man.
From a team standpoint, the mid-Missouri Sectional and KC
Sectional duke it out for state honors. While KC possesses four of the
top seven teams in the state and mid-Missouri possesses only three of
the top nine, mid-Missouri has the state champion.
St. Louis
Sectionals show up in number five SLUH and number six South. SLUH and
South are not very different. Number one men for each finished within a
second and a half. SLUH defeated South in dual score of 27-28. Both
teams rely on strong group running rather than individual exploits.
Both need to lift performance to compete against Kansas City.
Generally
regional dominance occurs in cycles. The exception to the rule is, of
course, West Plains. Still, if the KC cycle is to end soon, it must be
countered with hard work and consistent effort from other regions of
the state. KC athletes and coaches are to be commended for the
excitement they have created about the sport of cross country.

A LOOK FORWARD TO 2003
Posted Saturday, November 16,2002, 9:33AM by Jim Schmuck
With
this season completed, it might be interesting to look forward to the
teams that have promise for 2003. SLUH will lose five of its top 7, but
will bring back two solid performers and has had good freshman teams in
the past. Coach Linhares has done a good job of reloading over the
years. They may have some difficulty staying ahead of Zumwalt South and
the six athletes they return. Coach Enke is equally adept at fashioning
winning teams. This group has been auditioning for their senior year
for the past two seasons.
Kirkwood is another team that is
likely to push to the top. Their freshman groups have been formidable
and they broke fresh ground with their entrance into the state meet.
Chaminade is the most recent team to have won a state championship in
the St. Louis area and they return all stater Buha, who has been a
force individually in the area all season.
CBC and Desmet, by
virtue of their large squads and historically strong programs, are
likely to be top teams in 2003. Desmet will be anxious to reclaim their
number one status in St. Louis from a year ago.
Fox still has
good athletes returning. They have competed in the state meet in each
of the last two years and have won a conference championship. The
elements should be impetus for this squad to lift its performance level
in 2003. Marquette will return Jeffries. The top sophomore in St. Louis
through the District and Sectional series will be a magnet around whom
Coach Cary will likely fashion a full and competitive team.
Other
teams in other areas of the metro region also have bright spots, but
either lose significant members of this year's team or do not have the
underclass groups evident to lift them to the level of the teams
mentioned above. All have high aspirations.
As a region St.
Louis must lift its performance level since no St. Louis team was of
trophy quality in 2002. Desmet remains as the last Class 4 team to earn
a trophy with its fourth place finish in 2001. It remains to be seen
whether or not Zumwalt, Kirkwood or Chaminade can build around its
solid nucleus to become that next trophy team.

JUNIOR VARSITY OVERVIEW
Posted Friday, November 15,2002, 7:38PM by Jim Schmuck
The
junior varsity had one of the most successful seasons in years. They
were deep and talented. Oftentimes they managed the lowest scores of
the three divisions. They began their competitive season with a shutout
of the fellow Parkway schools at the Quad. Josh Lockwood won the
individual crown and was followed in quick order by Chase, Steve, Joey
and Simon. This fivesome proved to be a difficult group to overcome.
They
followed the Quad championship with the championship at the Central
Invitational. Kirkwood posed the strongest challenge to the South
junior varsity. However, scoring just 21 points at Central, the junior
varsity placed five athletes in the top eight. Joshua was the meet
champion, followed by Chase in second and Steve in fourth. Joey
finished sixth and David Horton finalized the scoring with his eighth
place finish.
The varsity took Joshua away for the Warrior
Invitational, but he rest hardly skipped a beat. Chase Bohling won the
championship with Steve LaChance finishing second. David and Joey
finished fourth and fifth and Simon finished the scoring when he
finished ninth. This was also the meet that began the transition of
Matt Hollander from runner to competitor.
The Hazelwood East
championship was next. It took seven places to get the Patriots' top
five in. Josh led the way with a brilliant race against Tom Kinder of
Zumwalt South. Chase was next with Steve, David and Simon completing
the top five. Jon Simon had one of his best races ever.
The
highlight of the junior varsity season may well have been the Fred Lyon
Invitational where the junior varsity group defeated seventeen other
area teams, including perennial power SLUH. Raca dropped down to
capture the individual crown. Chase was just a step behind. Steve
finished in third place and Joey and David completed the top five for
South.
The last regular season contest for the junior varsity
was the Conference championships. Both Joshua and Raca were lifted to
the varsity. Chase took control at the jv level and won the individual
championship. Steve, David and Joey finished right behind. When Simon
finished in sixth place, the celebration could begin in earnest. The
Patriots had outdistanced Webster by 44 points.
Several other
junior varsity athletes had stellar seasons. Matt Hollander continued
to race very well from mid-season on. Karthik Ponnusamy dropped minutes
off of his time and kept them off. By season's end Karthik had become a
very effective athlete.
Several of these jv athletes are
seniors. They offered great depth and support to the team overall
throughout the season. They will certainly be missed. The
underclassmen, however, must take up the slack and must drive
themselves to become the next top members of the junior varsity and the
next fulfilling members of the varsity. The key will be off season
mileage and the willingness to improve and to sacrifice.

FRESHMAN OVERVIEW
Posted Friday, November 15,2002, 7:18PM by Jim Schmuck
The
freshmen did a very good job this fall. They came out in numbers and
they worked hard everyday. Coach Faulhaber was very pleased with this
group and felt that they were everything a coach could hope for in
athletes. They are a very intelligent group and have done an excellent
job in the classroom. Ideally we will see these athletes in the South
colors over the next three seasons. Several have potential to
contribute important races on the varsity level.
Corey Griffin
was the leader of this group. He ran very well and was able to improve
his times throughout the year. Early on only a wrong turn at an
inopportune moment kept him from winning the Parkway Quad. When the
Patriots moved up to 5000 meters, Corey led the group into a seemless
transition.
Several athletes fit into the next group. Jeff
Haddock, Reid Garcia and Andrew Leicht were most often involved in the
next group. These three guys worked hard and have the ability to make
important contributions in the near future. Luyi Zhao was also a member
of this group. Luyi showed great effort in practice and will likely see
that effort become race reality over the next season.
Nick
Zevely moved up from the middle of the pack to the front pack as the
season progressed. Particularly after the transition to 5K Nick was
able to stay in close contact with the top group. Matt Roeleveld,
Ramsey Hilton and Michael Collier managed to lift their performances on
a regular basis. They along with Ali Etemady found that the harder they
worked, the better they raced.
Matt Zinselmeier, Winston Wun,
Aaron Menolascino, and Jake Adamovic all worked very hard to conquer
the distance work that allowed them to race rather than run. They
showed through efforts late in the season that they had reached the
next level as beginning cross country athletes. They must now use the
out of season work to lift themselves to a point where they do not
spend half of the season just getting into condition. Zack Heller
suffered from lower leg problems early on. He overcame those problems,
but they did cause him problems in his ability to accumulate mileage.
Steven Hanrahan also had difficulty with minor leg problems.
In the end, this squad amassed a 32-19 record. The real key is whether or not they build on this initial foundation.
REFLECTIONS ON THE STATE MEET
Posted Friday, November 15,2002, 3:20PM by Jim Schmuck
The
first and easiest reflection is that it was one of the most exciting
and the largest state meet I can ever remember. West Plains and Liberty
were everything they had promised to be. West Plains did an excellent
job in defeating a tremendous Liberty squad by just a few points. The
dual meet score would have been 27-28. Both teams deserve all of the
accolades they have accrued over the year.
The fans at state
were both the largest and the most gracious. They packed the sidelines
and cheered their athletes and the great athletes from around the
state. Kathleen Nelson's article in Saturday's Post was put to life by
the celebration that was the state meet.
Kansas City had howled
all year long that they were great and then in the state meet, they
backed it all up with 3 teams from KC finishing in the top four. I
don't know if there has been a time when KC cross country overall has
been better than it is now, but no one can deny that it was all they
claimed it to be and more. The coaches in KC have touted their athletes
in recent years and have illustrated with fine team performances that
the talent pool in KC is deep, wide and well coached.
In the St.
Louis area the MCC once again provided the area's best team. Last year
Desmet took overall number one honors and this year SLUH finishes as
the number one team in the St. Louis area. While many wish to debate
the public v. private school issues, all would agree that the Coach
Linhares era illustrates what a coach means to a program. Prior to
Coach Linhares SLUH was not a respected program. They were very nice
kids, but they had very little success, 1960 notwithstanding. However,
since Coach Linhares came to SLUH they have been a dominant program and
a class act. They aren't good because they are private; they are good
because they have a terrific coach who has used a system to draw good
kids into his program. They do and they should value his work.
Other
MCC teams helped represent 25% of the top sixteen teams at the state
meet. Chaminade finished tenth and was a worthy representative of the
conference and their school. Desmet and CBC were down from the year
before, but still managed to finish as a state qualifier. Both have
deep squads and will continue to be area heavyweights. The MCC overall
has to be considered the top cross country conference in the area.
Fort
Zumwalt South chose a bad time to have health problems. They performed
well all year. With six underclassmen on their state squad, they will
be a formidable team in 2003. Kirkwood had a breakthrough year. They
have run well all season and will return a great deal of talent next
fall. Marquette found a terrific number one man in Garrett Jeffries.
They will have Jeffries for two more seasons. That alone should provide
some recruiting strength for the Mustangs. Fox was the third squad from
the Suburban West Conference. This was their second consecutive trip to
state. They ran very well during the regular season and will return
some very fine athletes for next fall.
All of these teams are
coached by tremendous people. Zumwalt South's Coach Enke will be
inducted into the state coaches' hall of fame in December and is
nominated for the National Federation Hall of Fame.
By and large
the state meet was an EVENT! Great athletes, a great day and great
support all provided for a tremendous season-ending state meet.
At
South we must take the challenge laid down by the outstanding KC teams
and SLUH to lift our performances up to another level. The wonderful
element of athletics is that this challenge serves to bring athletes
and coaches closer within teams and around the state.
HIGHLIGHTS
Posted Wednesday, November 13,2002, 7:05PM by Jim Schmuck
This
season has been very successful for the Patriots. The varsity team
contested against 113 other teams during the year and ended with a
record of 103-10. They opened with the St. Charles Invitational,
finishing fourth. Kevin and Tim led the senior-laden group. Among the
teams South defeated were 3A defending champion Chaminade and eventual
North District champion Pattonville.
This year's schedule was a
bit peculiar in that Parkway chose to stage the Quad on a Friday
afternoon. The four squads came together at Queeny Park and South
delivered an old fashioned beating on its sister schools. For only the
second time in the 27 year history of the meet, Central finished as
high as second. Tim Levine became the 2002 Quad champion defeating
Billy Bell. Bell was the only "foreign" athlete to break into South's
top five. The meet also marked the advent of varsity competition for
sophomore John Leicht and freshmen Ben Brammeier and Kirk Chitwood.
South
was washed away the following Thursday at Central. They had to wait
until the following Monday for the chance to defend their Central
Invitational championship. Kirkwood had made it pretty clear that they
had sights on the Patriots. The Pioneers have fielded very good
freshmen teams of late and felt ready to best the Pats. Over the first
mile the field bled red, with South, Kirkwood and top Central athletes.
Shortly after the mile, the only red of note wore blue shorts. John
Leicht came of age with an excellent run.
Next on the schedule
was the Warrior Invitational. We have attended this meet three times
and have come away champions each year. Lindbergh and Bootheel District
champion Fox were the main rivals. Kevin John was not well and minor
surgery kept John Leicht out of the lineup. It didn't make much
difference as the Patriots drove the field. Joshua Lockwood made his
second appearance on the varsity that afternoon.
South travelled
north to Hazelwood East as defending champions. They were also in a
position to tangle with Fort Zumwalt South which had been ahead of the
Patriots at St. Charles. The opportunity for a fine competition
appeared evident. To the casual observer it may have looked like a
dandy meet, however, the Pats forgot to push themselves to the limit
and fell short of Zumwalt 27-30. It was a nice opportunity to remind
athletes the cost of success. The following week was a good work week
as they prepared for the Fred Lyon Invitational.
The "little
engine" ran his finest race of the season at Jefferson Barracks. He and
John Leicht stayed together much of the race. At the 3500 meter mark,
Ben put the pedal down and drove away from John and the field, running
16:55 and winning the championship. By this point in the season Tim,
Kevin, Kirk and Ben had taken turns finishing as the number one man for
the Patriots.
Goal number one was winning the Quad championship.
Goal number two was the Conference championship. South did not
disappoint. Taking control early, the South pack destroyed the field.
The only mystery remaining was whether or not John Leicht could defeat
Tony Payton for the individual crown. Over the final 400 meters Payton
was no match for John. John became the fifth different Patriot to
finish as number one. He chose a good week since he became the focus of
two newspaper articles. For only the second time in history all seven
Patriots became All Conference: John Leicht, Kevin John, Kirk Chitwood,
Brad Kuntzman, Ben Brammeier, Jeff Misuraca and Josh Lockwood.
The
District meet found the Patriots ready to defend their crown. All seven
athletes became All District: Kevin John, John Leicht, Ben Brammeier,
Brad Kuntzman, Tim Levine, Josh Lockwood, Kirk Chitwood. It was a very
businesslike performance. The buzz of the day was Marquette defeating
Kirkwood for second. All that occurred in South's rear view mirror.
The
Sectional meet found another different lineup for South. Brad Kuntzman
was down with illness. Jeff Misuraca and Chase Bohling came into the
varsity. It made no difference as both Tim Levine and Kevin John
dropped below the 17 minute barrier to lead South to another Sectional
championship. Five Patriots earned All Sectional honors: Tim Levine,
Kevin John, John Leicht, Kirk Chitwood and Ben Brammeier. The final
goal had been achieved as well. Each year South strives to be one of
the sixteen best teams in the state and to run in the final competitive
meets of the season.
So on Saturday Parkway South competed
against fifteen of the best teams from around the state. John Leicht
became only the second South sophomore to earn All State status as he
led the Patriots to a sixth place finish. The quality of this team has
become such that while many alums sent their best and congratulations,
they pointed out that they expect the PS to finish ahead of the SLUH in
2003. If that is to occur then the effort must begin since the baby
billikens will be doing their out of season running.
More rundown on the junior varsity and the freshmen in days to come.
BANQUET RESERVATIONS
Posted Wednesday, November 13,2002, 10:30AM by Jim Schmuck
Please
make your banquet reservations immediately if you have not done so yet.
The banquet is scheduled for Thursday, Novermber 21. We plan on
beginning to serve food at 6:30.
Dress for the boys should be a shirt, tie and nice slacks.
There
is a nice picture in the Journal of the state race at the 400 meter
mark. It gives a quick snapshot of where the favorites were early.
Now
is a good time to make connections with teammates and begin your winter
training. Keep a log of mileage. Mileage makes distance athletes
better. There is no way around the commitment necessary to excel. The
beginning of cross country is only ten months away. If you plan on
finishing in the top four in 2003, the quest begins with you today.
JOHN LEICHT ALL STATE
Posted Sunday, November 10,2002, 11:53AM by Jim Schmuck
John
Leicht led the Patriots to sixth place in the state on Saturday. John
put himself in excellent position early, pushed into the fray at the
"fingers" and drove himself beyond his comfort level in the final 500
meters to finish 18th and all state as a sophomore. John is the first
all state sophomore for South since Adam MacDowell in 1994.
Several
Patriots ran strong races. Jeff Misuraca turned in his second
outstanding race in two weeks. He was aggressive from the start and
right into the chute.
Kevin John improved upon his 2001 finish,
running a good style race. He put himself in proper position and
indicated that the tactics worked for him.
We had some concerns
regarding our youngest members of the state group. Running two freshmen
and a sophomore was risky. Often young ones in their first state
competition have significant difficulty. For the most part, all three
did well. Kirk got into the race in good fashion and competed well
throughout. He recognizes how important increased physical strength is.
Ben ran a solid middle portion of the race. At one point he and Kirk
were running side by side. And John earned an all state position.
Tim
gave himself an opportunity to succeed in this meet. He and Kevin
worked much of the first 3500 meters together. Brad put himself in good
placement early and will be in good position next year to follow
through.
The trip was interesting, driven by the increased
energy of the freshmen. We enjoyed the time at Westminster and the
generosity of the school district in providing meals, lodging and
transportation for these athletes.
Thanks also to Mrs. Leicht
who provided magnificent "goody bags" for all of the athletes
travelling to the state meet. She also created a terrific "state bound"
bulletin board.
Thanks to all of the parents who have been so
instrumental to all of the perks these athletes have enjoyed throughout
the season. Thanks also to Skip MacDowell for the food from the St.
Louis Bread Company and thanks to the St. Louis Bread Company for their
sponsorship throughout this year and the past several years.
Now
we must look to TEN MONTHS from now when the new season begins!
Freshmen, including Corey Griffin and Andrew Leicht, will need to take
the next step to fill the losses of this year's graduating seniors.
Those varsity athletes returning must begin replenishing their mileage
over the winter and must watch after each other. And watch for Ramsey
Hilton to surprise a few people.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK NOVEMBER 3
Posted Sunday, November 3,2002, 7:01PM by Jim Schmuck
No
substantial changes from last week's top ten, merely some rearranging
of order. The only top ten team not running in the state meet is number
ten, Lindbergh. The Flyers came up just short of qualifying at
Jefferson Barracks.
1. Ft. Z. South-South finished second to
nationally ranked West Plains in qualifying to the Class 4 state meet.
They will bring a strong pack and a young squad.
2. SLUH-the
junior Billikens glided through a weak north district and carried
fellow MCC schools with it. Aspirations of a state championship will
dance through their dreams this week.
3. Kirkwood-the Pioneers
ran their best meet of the year, firing on all cylinders. They will be
making their first trip to state as a team since the mid-nineties. This
is a group that should finish in the top ten.
4. Marquette-the
Mustangs ran well as a team. Jeffries ran well again, but more
importantly the pack ran well for Marquette. Their chances at state
hinge on how high Jeffries can place.
5. Chaminade-the Red
Devils have chafed at being placed in Class 4 for cross country, but
their qualifying status seems to justify the expectation that teams
with a wider range of student draw can compete at a higher level.
6.
Fox-the Warriors make a repeat trip to the state championships. This
group has been consistent over the past two seasons. They ran well
enough Saturday to grab the brass ring. They will have to lift their
performance level to crack the top ten at the state meet.
7.
Desmet-young teams have a tendency to run up and down. At sectional
they ran a bit down, but had no trouble qualifying. The Spartans will
receive good seasoning at Jefferson City.
8. St. Charles West-West won its District and goes to Jeff City as a favorite to win the Class 3 state championship.
9.
Herculaneum-Herky dominated its District meet and now heads to Jeff
City looking to win the Class 2 state championship. They must avoid
taking a Licking.
10 Lindbergh-the Flyers are getting to the
Sectional with frustrating consistency. They must find a way to move up
that next level.
The state meet will be run in Jefferson
City next Saturday. Perhaps the most exciting day in cross country,
however, is the Friday evening when teams are viewing the course. All
teams and all athletes are potential state champions, medal winners or
trophy winners. Coaches who have individuals watch coaches who have
teams and imagine what they can do to bring the whole group to the
state meet. Coaches with teams enjoy the serene moment of success,
knowing that regardless of what their athletes experience on Saturday,
the worst 16th place finish feels better than the best 17th place.
OVERVIEW OF THE SECTIONAL RESULTS
Posted Sunday, November 3,2002, 4:08PM by Jim Schmuck
The
sixteen teams to run in the state meet were decided throughout the
state. As is always the case, there is discussion about the legitimacy
of teams. Overall the biggest surprise was that there were no
significant surprises.
Sectional One
South
Kirkwood
Marquette
Fox
This
sectional was competitive. Kirkwood ran its best race of the season.
Marquette continues to improve and run well. Fox used the experience of
qualifying a year ago to bolster it through the meet this year.
Northwest and Lindbergh had good front efforts, but fell short in the
depth needed to move on.
Sectional Two
SLUH
Chaminade
CBC
Desmet
SLUH
had an easy time with its MCC sisters. Chaminade may not like the new
multiplier, but may have gone a long way to proving the point that they
belonged on the Class 4 level. None of the north district schools came
close to breaking into this top four.
Sectional Three
West Plains
Ft. Zumwalt South
Kickapoo
Jeff City
Familiar
names for the most part. St. Louis' top rated Zumwalt South finishes
second to nationally ranked West Plains. Kickapoo and Jeff City provide
a mid-Missouri and Southwest Missouri flavor to the state meet.
Sectional Four
Liberty
Blue Springs
St. Joseph Central
Lee's Summit
Strong
teams from the KC side of the state. Liberty hopes to wrest the state
title from West Plains. Lee's Summit nipped district rival Lee's Summit
North by one point for the final qualifying spot.
The
stage is set for an outstanding state championship. For the first time
two nationally ranked teams from Missouri will go head to head in the
state meet. Top ranked teams from eastern Missouri include Fort Zumwalt
South and SLUH who will be on the fringes of the big battle, along with
Blue Springs from the west side, hoping for the upset.
Area top ten later this evening.
SOUTH WINS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Posted Saturday, November 2,2002, 6:43PM by Jim Schmuck
The
Patriots ran well enough to win this afternoon's Sectional meet at
Jefferson Barracks. The weather was in the 40's, the footing was good
in places, mushy in places and swampy in places. The race was a very
good one.
Seniors Tim Levine and Kevin John led South in
defense of its Sectional crown. Kevin ran his aggressive style and Tim
partnered up with him to provide a strong duo. At one point the top
five Patriots were literally within spitting range.
Five runners
earned All-Sectional medals: Tim Levine, Kevin John, John Leicht, Kirk
Chitwood and Ben Brammeier. The red and blue was clearly evident
throughout the race among the spectacular fall colors of the leaves.
Joining
South as state qualifiers were Kirkwood, Marquette, and Fox. Kirkwood
ran so much better this week than last. They were aggressive from the
beginning. Johnson ran his finest race of the season and the Pioneers
ran the strongest team race of their season. Marquette worked off of
Jeffries' individual third place finish to take a solid team third
place and Fox, the Bootheel District champion, finished in fourth place.
Early
on in the race, the two most distinctive pictures were the battle
between Payton of Eureka, McDonald of Poplar Bluff and Jeffries of
Marquette for first and the five red and blue figures right behind
them. Tim looked very good and was very aggressive today. Kevin
continues his excellent running of late. He was as smooth as white
chocolate in the back part of the course near the river. John and Kirk
were feisty. Through the middle mile they chased down opponents. Ben
ran a gutsy race. He found himself responsible for the team's success
on a day when he was struggling, but true to championship form, he
fought to gather all he could to protect the team. Raca returned to
form with his best time of the season. His style was smooth and
horizontal, which is always a good sign. Chase ran just as consistently
as one could hope. Normally a trip to the varsity level can throw off
one's rhythm, but not so with Chase. He ran with clear determination
and strong purpose.
Kirkwood celebrated long and loud with
principal Dr. David Holley in the midst of the celebration as they
return to the state championships for the first time since the
mid-nineties. South, on the other hand, enjoyed a magnificent picnic
provided by team parents.
The girls fell two points short of qualifying, but will send Beth, Lauren and Amy to Jeff City.
Once
again, South alums were in evidence at the meet. Will McAllister, Jason
Givens, Greg Levine, John Haugen along with Lafayette girls' coach
Scott Brandon and Jim Wilder, Lindbergh coach, meet host and teammate
of Scott's at South were all at Jefferson Barracks. AD Chip Allison
drove down to watch the meet and congratulate the team champions.
Next
week at Jeff City promises to be exciting. South will comprise the only
full team from Parkway to compete in the state championships.
OVERVIEW OF THE SECTIONAL LINEUP
Posted Wednesday, October 30,2002, 6:35PM by Jim Schmuck
The Sectional at Jefferson Barracks brings together teams that all have legitimate opportunity to qualify to the state meet.
Marquette-after
finishing second in the Suburban West Conference, they defeated
Kirkwood in the District meet. Garrett Jeffries has become an
individual force. This team has every reason to believe they are a
qualifier to the state meet.
Kirkwood-the Suburban West
Conference champion and a team with deep talent. The Pioneers have run
well throughout the season and possess enough talent to win the
Sectional.
Eureka-with Tony Payton, the Wildcats possess a
front-runner. They will need to get more juice out of their pack if
they are going to have a real shot at the top four.
Fox-the
Warriors are the District champion from the Bootheel District. They
qualified to the state meet in 2001 and are well coached. They have
good knowledge of all the teams in the Sectional. It appears likely
that this group will find its way to Jeff City for the second
consecutive year.
Lindbergh-this team is the most talented team
that the Flyers have brought to the Sectional meet in recent years.
They have knocked on this door frequently, but have not gotten inside
to the state meet. They have defeated several of the teams in the
Sectional meet over the course of the year. If they have their "A"
race, they will run on Nov. 9.
Cape Central-the Indians have a
long history of good cross country. They possess several quality
athletes. Their depth may cause them problems and they will need some
help to get past several good teams to get into the top four. That
said, nearly every Sectional meet provides one surprise qualifier.
Northwest-the
Lions have been a solid unit throughout the year. They were the
runner-up team in the Suburban South Conference. They were the team
champion at the Stan Nelson Invitational and have good knowledge of all
teams in the Sectional. In order to qualify, they will have to have all
members of their top five running near their best. That expectation is
not unreasonable.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK OCTOBER 27
Posted Sunday, October 27,2002, 7:33PM by Jim Schmuck
Last
week's top ten moved a bit with the District meets and improvement on
the part of teams that have made progress through the season. One or
two teams showed nerves in the District. That nervy quality could cause
a team or two to have difficulty in the Sectional. Several of those
Sectional spots will be up for grabs.
1. Ft.Z.South-maintains
its top ranked position after holding off an improving Jeff City squad
to win the Mid-Missouri District championship. This group meets
nationally ranked West Plains in Columbia.
2. SLUH-abused a
district full of MCC conference teams with a close-packed performance.
They will accompany those three sister schools to the north district.
3.
Marquette-the Mustangs ran at the top of their form to run down
conference champion Kirkwood. They will be a favorite in the tightly
contested Sectional at Jefferson Barracks.
4. Kirkwood-still
plenty of firepower, but surprised by Marquette. Good depth promises a
favorite position for the Pioneers in Saturday's Sectional.
5. Desmet-sneaking up the rankings as they have re-assembled a state qualifying caliber group. Surprised the shaky Red Devils.
6.
Chaminade-qualified in the third position, but did not show the
confidence that was evident earlier in the season. Should still find a
comfortable berth at the north Sectional.
7. Fox-repeated as the
District champions. The Warriors look for a repeat trip to state. They
come to the Jefferson Barracks Sectional. They will confront fellow
Suburban West members Marquette and Kirkwood.
8. Lindbergh-the
Flyers have been gone a long time from the state championships. Over
the past several years they have made it this far only to fall short of
reclaiming some of the glory of the past. This Saturday the qualifying
berth is within their grasp.
9. St. Chas. West-this group has talent and should find its way into the class 3 state championships.
10 Herculaneum-a favorite to win the class 2 state championship. Won a weekend invitational big over the weekend.
Historically
a team certain to make it through has found the path difficult at
Sectionals. In the north Pattonville, McCluer North and Hazelwood West
are interested in taking the measure of Chaminade and CBC. At Jefferson
Barracks all eight teams feel that they have a legitimate shot at the
state meeet. At Columbia, Zumwalt sees only West Plains in front of
them. Saturday will be exciting.

DISTRICT RESULTS OVERVIEW
Posted Sunday, October 27,2002, 2:34PM by Jim Schmuck
The districts produced pretty predictable results.
1. Fox, Lindbergh, Cape Central, Northwest
2. South, Marquette, Kirkwood, Eureka
3. SLUH, Desmet, Chaminade, CBC
4. Pattonville, McCluer North, Hazelwood West, Hazelwood Central
5. Ft. Z. South, Jeff City, Columbia Hickman, Rock Bridge
6. West Plains, Kickapoo, Glendale, Parkview
7. Liberty, St. Joe Central, Park Hill South, Truman
8. Blue Springs, Lee's Summit North, Lee's Summit, Rockhurst
The
meet between the Bootheel and JB pits Suburban West and Suburban South
teams, with the addition of Cape Central. Kirkwood won the West, but
was beaten by Marquette in the District. Fox is a two-time District
champion and a state qualifier from a year ago. Tradition suggests that
there will be an upset or two in this Sectional.
Central's
District will travel to a watered-down Sioux Passage course to meet the
north District. At the request of SLUH, the Sectional course was made
easier. In most years, the four teams from Central would waltz through
the Sectional. Chaminade was added to the Central District. The private
schools, except for SLUH, have been stronger in the past. Chaminade is
a defending state champion, albeit in the lower Class 3 division.
Whether the north District qualifiers are stronger this year will be
seen on Saturday.
The Mid-Missouri District will be paired with
Springfield. It is unimaginable that West Plains will not take one
spot. It would be reasonable to expect Zumwalt South and Jeff City to
get two others. The fourth should be up for grabs.
As
mentioned earlier, Sectional meets almost always find a way to surprise
some team that was expected to be a lock. No team should make motel
reservations just yet, with possible exception of West Plains and
Liberty.
SOUTH WINS THE DISTRICT
Posted Saturday, October 26,2002, 11:15PM by Jim Schmuck
The
weather was overcast and the footing not too bad, albeit soft. The race
was more businesslike than frenetic, but in the end South put five
athletes in the top ten and all seven in the top thirty. The ACT
appeared to play a greater role in the performance of the women, but
did seem to have a bit of an effect on Josh.
Kevin got out in
good position today. John went with him early in the race and the two
did a nice job holding down the third and fourth spots. Brad just keeps
racing better and better each week. He is getting into position and
maintaining good aggressiveness. Both Kirk and Ben raced consistently.
The three of them kept in good contact and filled the 7-8-9 places. Tim
was not far behind in 12th. Josh finished 30th.
The top four teams were South, Marquette, Kirkwood and Eureka.
The
meet brought out a number of alums as well as local figures who are
prominant in area running history. Recent alums Maggie and Maureen
Conley, Vince Kruse and William McAllister all ran in the open race.
Brian Hutsel, Steve Fetick, Eric Holyoke, Craig Luciano, and Josiah
Benedict all made appearances at the meet. Greg Levine came to see
brother Tim compete.
Bob Dorr and Mike Morrison represented
the founding fathers of South cross country. Bobby was on the first
team to ever compete for South and Mike was a member of the first team
to win a conference championship and run in the state meet. Bob's dad,
Dave Dorr, was the sportswriter for the Post-Dispatch during the time,
(60's and 70's), when cross country and track were written about in
depth and at length. Mr. Dorr now works with the Jackie Joyner Kersee
Foundation.
Mr. Leicht, a celebrity in xc in his own light,
brought Tom McCracken and Al Jaworski to the meet. Both of these former
Lindbergh coaches were famous for their outstanding teams and class
athletes.
Overall it was a very good day for the Patriots. THEY
ARE THE 2002 CROSS COUNTRY DISTRICT CHAMPIONS. In addition to that team
championship, each of the top seven earned All-District honors. They
are: Kevin John, John Leicht, Brad Kuntzman, Kirk Chitwood, Ben
Brammeier, Tim Levine and Josh Lockwood.
The girls also qualified to next week's Sectional meet at Jefferson Barracks.
The
boys will add Fox, Lindbergh, Cape Central and Northwest. The top four
teams next week will qualify for the state championship meet.
DISTRICT PREVIEW
Posted Wednesday, October 23,2002, 8:01PM by Jim Schmuck
Saturday's
District will bring nine teams to Jefferson Barracks. Four teams will
automatically qualify and any team capable of qualifying five athletes
within the top thirty finishers.
Kirkwood-The Suburban West
Conference Champions. They have had a strong season. The Pioneers have
aspirations to sneak the championship away. They pack well and they
have serious talent.
Eureka-The Wildcats are led by conference
runner-up Tony Payton. Payton has a serious chance to win the District
championship. His teammates will need to step up to qualify, but have a
shot.
Washington-Nagel returns and the Jays have some potential with athletes returning from last springs all-state 4x800 team.
West-Sixteen
straight trips to the state championships on the line. That is a
powerful incentive to run their best. They will need all of that
incentive to get to the next level.
Vianney-Wethington leads a group capable of qualifying. They have experience at Jefferson Barracks.
Marquette-Jeffries
ran lights-out last week. The Mustangs see the Pioneers in their sights
and have aspirations to capture both the individual and the team
championships.
Lafayette-The Lancers will need some good fortune and strong performances to make it through the district.
Summit-The Falcons didn't field a full squad at the conference meet. They will need to hope for individual glory on Saturday.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK OCTOBER 20
Posted Sunday, October 20,2002, 7:24PM by Jim Schmuck
Conference
meets are over and no major surprises. Suburban West
Champions-Kirkwood; Suburban North Champions Hazelwood West in the
closest finish; Suburban South Champions-South; MCC Champions-SLUH. GAC
North-St. Charles West; GAC South-Fort Zumwalt South. West and South
Conference champions will meet in the Jefferson Barracks District.
Hazelwood West will be the favorite in the north District. SLUH will
continue its run through MCC teams at Central. Fort Zumwalt will travel
to mid-Missouri.
1. Ft. Z. South-Champions of the GAC. They
begin their qualification as the favorite in the mid-Missouri District.
Jeff City will be the primary opponent.
2. Kirkwood-Dispatched
the rest of the West Conference with little trouble. They will be a
primary contender in the Jefferson Barracks District.
3. SLUH-The jr. bills ran through the rest of the MCC with ease.
4.
Chaminade-The Red Devils finish as runners-up to SLUH and will have a
chance for a rematch at the District meet. Buha and Schaeffer will
battle for the individual championship along with Central's Bell.
5. F. H. Central-Runner-up in the GAC South and a consistent performer throughout the season.
6.
Marquette-Runner-up in the West Conference and improving every week.
Jeffries ran big at the conference meet. He will be a contender for the
District Championship.
7. Northwest-Hirtz ran his best race of
the season and led Northwest to a second place finish in the South
Conference. He will lead his team in the Bootheel District.
8. Fox-Boone continues to provide stability for this team. Fox will be a factor in the Bootheel District.
9. St. Charles West-Winners of the GAC North. As a Class 3 squad they will not be in the state qualifying for another week.
10.
Herculaneum-The BlackCats will also bide their time for another week
before beginning their qualifying round for the state meet.
A
big week coming up for many teams as they begin their qualifying
efforts. Vianney has aspirations at JB. Parkway West has a sixteen year
tradition on the line. Ronald Reagan was president the last time West
failed to qualify. SLUH and Chaminade look like locks, but what other
two teams will come out of the Central District? Kirkwood and Marquette
look solid in the JB District.
CONFERENCE NOTES
Posted Saturday, October 19,2002, 9:18AM by Jim Schmuck
The
Patriots were dominant in the conference championships. John Leicht ran
a terrific race to become the 2002 conference champion, defeating a
very competitive Tony Payton from Eureka. John was the fifth different
number one man for South this fall.
Kevin worked hard to keep
himself in good position throughout the race and was a major factor in
keeping Kirk in good position as well. The result of that effort was
that South controlled the race early and maintained pressure on the
rest of the competitors.
Brad attempted a little different
tactic in the race on Friday and while it was a bit uncomfortable, as
all new experiences are, he completed it quite well and it will pay
dividends for him in the weeks to come. It will also feel more natural
over the next several weeks. Ben was not as comfortable this week and
still did a fine job of holding his place. He has a big heart in that
small body. If everyone competed with the same zeal and determination
as "the little engine," coaches would pay to coach.
Josh
continued on his season long improvement. He ran well and competed
hard. His races have gotten smoother and stronger each week. Raca
completed the cycle for South.
For only the second time in the 27 year history of South, seven Patriots earned all-conference honors.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The
jv had a more difficult task than usual. With both Josh and Raca
running at the varsity level, the demand on the jv to perform was
heightened. On top of that pressure was the reality that several jv
athletes were less than healthy. Steve did not feel well, but competed
very well. Hopefully he got some chicken soup when he got home Friday
evening.
Chase blistered the course and led the red scourge to
the top four places and five of the top six. Steve put his illness
aside to finish in the runner-up position. David surged over the final
2500 meters to finish third and Joey continued his season long drive to
the finish to finish fourth. Simon had expected a stronger race from
himself this week compared to last week and did not disappoint. He
battled throughout, guaranteeing a Patriot championship.
Jon
Simon ran his finest race of the season. Matt Hollander has quietly put
together a string of excellent performances. He is on the verge of
taking his distance running to the next level. Greg Thompson ran the
best competitive race of his career. Early on he was working himself
into good position and late in the race, he dug into the recesses of
his competitive nature to finish with a flair.
FRESHMAN
The
freshmen are such a delight. They work hard and they care so much that
their efforts are inspirational. Corey Griffin earned all-conference
freshman honors with his performance. Many of the freshmen competed
within seconds of their time a week ago on the same course. Jeff
Haddock not only improved his time, but did so by over a minute from
the week before, running a season's best time and working into a new
minute. Luyi Zhao, Nick Zevely, Ramsey Hilton, Matt Zinselmeier, Ali
Etemady and Zack Heller all improved their Jefferson Barracks times.
The rains came, but they did not dampen the championship spirits of the 2002 Suburban South Champions.
Patriots
of the Week include John Leicht, Chase Bohling, Matt Hollander and Greg
Thompson plus the full varsity squad of all-conference athletes.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Posted Thursday, October 17,2002, 9:11AM by Jim Schmuck
2002
is the twenty-fifth year South has competed in the Suburban South
Conference. The first two years South was part of the Suburban West
Conference. In the previous 24 years, South has won 18 championships.
The Patriots won their first championship in 1979 and their most recent
championship in 2001. During that time South has produced 102
all-conference athletes and 15 individual conference champions. The
most recent conference champion was Mike Serniak in 2001.
1979
The
first conference championship team was led by seniors Mike King and
Mike Morrison. It was a breakout year for the Patriots. The team won
the conference championship and took its first trip to state as a team.
1980
Kevin
Zeilmann led the Patriots to a repeat of the conference championship.
Kevin later competed in the state meet. Upon graduation Kevin entered
the Air Force Academy.
1981
The Patriots win their third
successive conference crown behind individual champion Randy Bell.
Bell, Greg Fisher, Scott Brandon, Todd Anderson and Mike Hinkebein led
the Pats into the state meet for the second time.
1983
After
a one-year hiatus, the '83 Patriots reclaim the conference
championship. Kirk Anderson, younger brother of Todd, becomes the
conference champion.
1984
David Carroll leads South to the championship and becomes the first underclassman for South to also win the individual crown.
1985
Carroll
repeats as conference champion, to become South's first two-time
champion. He is also the first three-time all-conference athlete for
South.
1986
South wins its fourth consecutive team
championship behind Tyrus Webb's individual conference crown. Tyrus
becomes South's first African-American conference champion.
1988
South's
conference streak stopped at four in 1987, but in 1988 the Patriots
returned the crown to 801 Hanna Road. Piere Brown won the outright
championship in his only year as a cross country athlete.
1989
In
'89 Chris Hempel, Greg Levine, Jeff Barry, and Joe Rizzo put together a
nice run near the end of the season to nab the team championship and to
later upset Kirkwood in the Sectional for a berth in the state
championships. It was the famous "blue uniforms" that tricked the field.
1990
For
the first, and only, time thus far, all seven Patriots earn
all-conference designation. Greg Levine is the individual conference
champion on his way to a third place finish in state.
1991
A
group of spirited juniors leads this group to the championship. Mike
Fussner, Ross Hubble, Rob Atteberry and Kenyon Brown run to victory.
1992
A
fifth consecutive championship is capped off by Mike Fussner's
individual win. Later Fussner and group run to a tie for third in the
state championships.
1994
The streak of championships
ended in 1993, but was quickly reconnected in 1994. The Adam MacDowell
era began. MacDowell became South's first sophomore conference
champion. The "engine" of this squad was Michael Barry. His "dreams"
led to a second place finish in the state championships.
1995
MacDowell becomes a two-time conference champion. The team rides his leadership to victory.
1996
MacDowell
wins an unprecedented third individual championship, while South
dominates the team conference. Ryan Eason runs in strong support of
Adam and the team finishes third in the state championships while
MacDowell runs to the individual state championship.
1997
Andy
Bosworth leads a practically new cast into the 1997 championship. For
the first time, South wins every regular season invitational, including
the conference championship.
2000
After losing two
conference championships by a total of 6 points, the Patriots return to
championship form behind individual champion Jacob Shearman.
2001
Mike
Serniak dominated the field last fall in winning the individual
championship and leading South to a conclusive win over Eureka and
Northwest.
While Serniak is graduated, South returns five
all-conference athletes. Eureka and Northwest will still be formidable
opponents in Friday's championships.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK OCTOBER 13
Posted Sunday, October 13,2002, 2:58PM by Jim Schmuck
Traditionally
several teams either slip out of town such as Marquette or take this
weekend off. SLUH, Desmet and CBC have generally taken this week to
regroup prior to doing battle in the MCC. It would seem to be more
ritual than reality this year. Chaminade was a perennial competitor in
the Fred Lyon meet when they were able to run on the small school
level. This year they took a pass. Kirkwood continues to improve.
Francis Howell Central stepped up a bit.
This next week teams
will be contesting conference championships. Among the defending
champions are Fox in the Suburban West; SLUH in the MCC; and the
Patriots in the Suburban South. The Suburban North will likely fight it
out between Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West. Pattonville has an
outside shot. In the Suburban West Kirkwood appears a lock, but Fox or
Lindbergh could surprise.
It is also the week teams begin to evaluate the quality of strength of Districts.
The
far west District has strong teams in Kirkwood and Marquette. The far
west will contest with the Bootheel District. Overall the Bootheel
District may be the most highly contested in eastern Missouri.
Lindbergh, Fox and Northwest are all solid squads. The inner west
District is significantly weaker than in the recent past. SLUH is still
a clear power. Both CBC and Desmet are ok, but not in SLUH's class.
Adding 3A state champion Chaminade to the mix will irritate some. The
north District will shake out as the Suburban North District. There was
a day when no one wanted anything to do with this group. That day has
long since past. St. Charles County will contest in the central part of
the state. At one time Jeff City and Columbia Hickman ruled this area.
That is true no longer as both will take a backseat to Zumwalt South.
1. Ft. Z. South-This young group keeps winning and getting stronger. Champions of the Lindenwood Invitational.
2.
Kirkwood-The Pioneers are stronger than they were three weeks ago. They
are aggessive and hungry. They are the favorite to capture the Suburban
West Conference.
3. SLUH-Took the week off and sent the "B"
squad. Word is that they are a little chinked up so the week may be
well used for rest. Favored to win the MCC and then roll over their
District.
4. Chaminade-Conspicuous by their absence at Fred Lyon after winning the Ladue Invitational the week before.
5. Lindbergh-Competed in a tri-meet, defeating Central and Summit and then running well at Fred Lyon. This group has talent.
6. F.H. Central-Quietly putting a good season together. A little overshadowed by fellow St. Charles County school Zumwalt South.
7.
Desmet-Still an enigma. They finished lower than usual in last week's
Jesuit Invitational and sat out the Fred Lyon, but have a lot of
weapons and deserve respect.
8. Fox-Continuing to compete
effectively in a season that has been very successful. They will have
to solve Kirkwood and Lindbergh to repeat as conference champions.
9.
Herculaneum-Setting their sights on Licking and trying to figure out
how to take home a state championship for the first time since the
eighties.
10 Northwest-A good group who will be in the hunt for the Suburban South championship on Friday.
BRIAN FLEMING HELPS AT FRED LYON
Posted Saturday, October 12,2002, 5:11AM by Jim Schmuck
Brian
Fleming, a cross country and track alum, stopped by Thursday's Fred
Lyon Invitational. The next thing he found out was that he was an
official. Brian did a great job working the chute and keeping athletes
passing through the chute. As a result, the races went off without a
hitch and all athletes were able to compete fairly and safely. Thanks
to Brian and congratulations to his brother Chris, also a cross country
and track alum who will be married shortly in Los Angeles.
FRED LYON INVITATIONAL CONTINUED
Posted Friday, October 11,2002, 8:06PM by Jim Schmuck
After
the varsity victory, the pressure was on the junior varsity to continue
their own winning streak. So far this fall, the jv has won the Quad,
the Central Invitational, the Fox Invitational and the East
Invitational. At Fred Lyon, Kirkwood continued to put the pressure on
the Patriots. Their five worked hard to stay tight together and to
disrupt the continuity of the South top six.
Raca led this
week's jv group and raced right to the front. He never looked back.
Opening a pretty good gap on teammates Chase Bohling and Steve
LaChance, Raca led his team through the entire race. Chase closed the
gap near the end, but couldn't quite get to Raca. They both raced
through the finish line.
Steve took the third place in the race
to give South a significant edge over rivals Kirkwood and SLUH. The key
then became whether Joey, David and/or Simon could pull back on the
Kirkwood pack. Joey made the strongest move. He worked hard over the
last 1500 meters to pull up on and into the Pioneer pack. With Joey's
tenth place finish and David driving to a nineteenth place finish, the
team championship fell on the Patriots.
FRESHMAN
The
freshman squad continues to race well and to improve as a team. Times
were stronger than the previous two weeks. Jefferson Barracks is a far
more difficult course than Arnold Park and more difficult than East,
yet many of the freshmen showed significant improvement. They are
running in groups and learning what it takes to excel. Corey led the
way as he has throughout the season. Reid continues to compete. Andrew
shows a strong heart and the shadow of great races to come. This group
will mature into a very good team over the length of their careers if
they will stay with it over their high school years and continue with
the enthusiasm they currently possess. This is a wonderful group of
young men.
Next on the schedule is the Conference Championship
next Friday at Jefferson Barracks. South has traditionally competed
well in the conference. Since 1978 when South became a member of the
Suburban South Conference, the Patriots have won eighteen
championships. South returns three all-conference athletes--Tim Levine,
Kevin John and Brad Kuntzman.

SOUTH WINS FRED LYON INVITATIONAL
Posted Thursday, October 10,2002, 10:15PM by Jim Schmuck
South
ran much better this week in winning the Fred Lyon Invitational. Ben
Brammeier raced to the individual championship over three teammates who
finished 2-3-4. Kirkwood challenged early as a group and throughout
with Johnson, who ran very well against the heart of the Patriot
leaders.
In the end, Ben and John pulled away from the group.
Kirk and Kevin continued to race against Johnson right to the bottom of
the last hill. Over the final five hundred meters, all the Patriots
pulled away from Johnson and Kevin stormed past both Johnson of
Kirkwood and Kirk before he began to bear down on John. The top four
powered to the finish.
Brad finished as the number five man. His
race was very consistent. He was a bit farther back at the mile, but
persistantly moved forward each time I saw him. By the loop around the
scenic hill, he had worked his way into the top ten and was gaining. He
finished in a strong sixth place to complete the scoring for South.
Josh
ran the same race on the varsity that he has been producing on the
junior varsity. He got himself into the contest and never backed down.
He knew that he was an important figure and ran like it.
Congratulations to the whole varsity group. I will post times, places and team results sometime tomorrow.
I will also spend time detailing the jv performance, as well as the freshman race, tomorrow.

South
had a number of alums present at the Hazelwood East Invitational.
Maryville's Vince Kruse, Maggie and Maureen Conley were present. Maggie
was named Maryville's "Athlete of the Week" for her work in cross
country. All three are competing well for Maryville in xc.
Brian
Hutsel was in from Mizzou and was fit enough to run in the all-comers
meet. There was an ambulance that arrived shortly after the beginning
of that race, but I am sure that that was a coincidence.
South's reigning Prom Queen sailed in from Indiana University. Allison John came home to see Kevin compete at East.
Jason
Givens dropped in from Truman and Mike Serniak had a free weekend from
competing for Rolla. It was nice to see all of you there.
I also appreciate the visor from Vince, which he won recently in a cross country meet.
TOP TEN OF THE WEEK OCTOBER 6
Posted Sunday, October 6,2002, 10:15AM by Jim Schmuck
There
were a number of meets this weekend. Ladue on Friday showed Chaminade
recovering from its performance at Hancock. It also showed that
Lindbergh is a legitimate power in the area after years of dormancy.
The West Invitational highlighted the power of Blue Springs, but also
indicated that Kirkwood deserves its high ranking in the area. SLUH is
the likely winner of the Jesuit Invitational, but Desmet's showing at
Hancock indicates that the Spartans are beginning to roll. Zumwalt
South did what it had to do in order to win the Hazelwood East
Invitational and maintain its position behind SLUH as the second best
team in the area. This week's Fred Lyon Invitational will provide the
last major meet in the area prior to conference championships and the
state series. The next likely place for a combination of strong teams
will be the state meet.
Fred Lyon on Thursday should bring
together Ladue Invitational winner Chaminade with many of the other
area teams. It will be the first time that the Patriots have seen the
Red Devils since St. Charles.
1. SLUH-The highest finishing St.
Louis team at Hancock and the winner of the Jesuit Invitational. SLUH
usually runs a second group at Fred Lyon as they prepare for the
conference and state sequence.
2. Ft. Z. South-Champions of the
Hazelwood East Invitational. They took advantage of passive running to
surge to victory. They become the favorites at the Lindenwood
Invitational this week.
3. Kirkwood-Second to the mighty Blue
Springs, the Pioneers are a major force in the area. They stand as the
current favorite in the Suburban West and a likely state representative.
4.
Desmet-Their Hancock finish suggests that the Spartans have revitalized
during this season. Smashing Chaminade at Hancock after being handily
defeated by them at St. Charles suggests that this is not the early
season team.
5. Chaminade-Winners at Ladue. The Red Devils
continue to compete effectively at the class 4 level. They are the
favorites at the Fred Lyon Invitational.
6. Lindbergh-The top
two individuals make the Flyers a force once again in the area. With a
month to go in the season, Lindbergh should be a strong factor in the
Sectional.
7. St. Charles West-This class 3 team is talented.
They have a strong one-two punch with Brazell and Swinney. Their sights
are on a top four finish in the state.
8. Marquette-Don't overlook this group as they continue to improve. Jeffries continues to shine.
9.
Francis Howell Central-A good group who have flown below the radar for
much of the season. They will compete in the mid-Missouri sectional
with Jeff City, Hickman and Rockbrigde along with other St. Charles
County schools.
10 Herculaneum-The class 2 school has
established itself as a legitimate contender for the state
championship. They won their division of the Hancock Invitational and
are the favorites for the Wednesday Small School division of Fred Lyon.

HAZELWOOD EAST INVITATIONAL
Posted Saturday, October 5,2002, 4:11PM by Jim Schmuck
South
finished second to number two ranked Fort Zumwalt South. The eight team
invitational became a dual meet between the two South Highs. Throughout
the first two miles Zumwalt was content to let the Patriots set a
comfortable pace on the beautiful Saturday morning. Over the last mile,
Zumwalt stepped up the pace. In the end, they had a bit more than the
Patriots and ran to a 27-30 victory.
Kirk Chitwood lifted his
performance to lead the Patriots. Kirk finished third overall and made
a valiant effort over the last mile to run down the numbers one and two
from Zumwalt. Brad also realized late into the race that the normal
leadership had faltered and that, as the junior, he had
responsibilities to push himself and his nearby teammates. He did that.
The youngsters in the line-up tried to close the distance, but Zumwalt
just had too much of a jump.
Early on the Patriots did an
excellent job of coming together. At the 800 meter mark, all seven of
the Pats were within spitting distance of each other. At that point
they had the opportunity to push the pace and punish the Bulldogs.
In the end, the Patriots learned some lessons in this meet that should help them as they continue through their season.

JUNIOR VARSITY
The
jv ran an aggressive race from the outset. They took control and did
not let up. Josh Lockwood and Kinder from Zumwalt locked into an
individual contest that continued throughout the meet. Neither could
shake the other. Chase and Steve continued their fine racing and both
finished in the top five of the meet. Both were followed in by David
Horton and Simon Joenck. Meet Over! Their 23 points was overwhelming.
Joey
Wenzel finished in tenth place and felt a bit sluggish. He came into
the morning group this past week and his sluggishness was expected.
Despite that he ran quite well. Many others of the jv group raced
really well. They were a little concerned that Hazelwood East would be
tougher than Fox, but they handled the course pretty easily. Times were
good.
The freshmen joined the normal jv and performed well.
Corey Griffin was active in his efforts to compete. He was not
intimidated at all. Luyi Zhao and Andrew Leicht competed well.
This group overall man-handled the jv field and put the day aright.
Individual meet times are on the stats page.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK SEPTEMBER 29
Posted Sunday, September 29,2002, 7:00PM by Jim Schmuck
The
week was full of activity with meets at Central, Wentzville, Fox and
Hancock. There are no more invisible teams. Kirkwood is much improved
over a year ago and Lindbergh will be a force. Fox and Northwest have
each won championships in the previous two weeks and are hungry for
success.
The Hancock meet disappointed some when West Plains
failed to enter. SLUH finished second to state powerhouse Liberty.
Edwardsville's Pifer ran a solid second to Perkins. Teams travel back
to their geographic areas this week with meets featuring the Jesuits at
Chaminade, the west county schools at the West Invitational and the
Hazelwood East Invitational.
The north county teams seem to have
the least power in the area as the districts begin to take shape. The
inner-west county district with CBC, SLUH, Desmet and Chaminade will
also have some competition with Webster and Central.
The north
district is wide open. The outer-west county district should be quite
competitive with West, Marquette, Eureka, Kirkwood and Washington
illustrating good quality. The Bootheel will contain Lindbergh, Fox and
Northwest to go with Poplar Bluff as early favorites to qualify.
1.
SLUH-regains top billing with its second place finish at Hancock. They
are not likely to contest for the state championship, but must be a
strong contender for a trophy.
2. Ft. Z. South-this underclass
group continues to shine. They are quite likely booking room
reservations in Jeff City as you read this.
3. Chaminade-the 3A
defending champions have a good chance of getting to the class 4
championships. Buha is a solid number one. They will have to compete
well, however, in a solid, if unspectacular, district.
4.
Lindbergh-it has been a while since a Lindbergh team has made any noise
in cross country as a team. This group is capable of that noise. They
are aggressive and talented. They will be reckoned with in both the
Suburban West conference championships and throughout the state series.
5. Kirkwood-out of the shadows and into the sunlight. This is a
talented group who will continue to improve throughout the season. They
will be contenders for the district and the sectional championships. It
has been a few years since they last competed in the state
championships. They will be there this November.
6. Fox-they
were building last year from this point forward and have not dropped a
stitch. A solid group with a good front runner in Boone. They also have
good support. Kirkwood and Fox will be a tough duo to overcome by
Lindbergh for the Suburban West crown.
7. St. Charles West-this
class 3 group is talented. Swinney leads a good cast of characters.
They are a top 5 group in the class 3 division and a good team in the
metro area.
8. Northwest-a team with some talent that is
learning its identity. Hirtz can run with most team's number one and
the rest are beginning to compete effectively. They will be a top three
team in the Suburban South and should come out of the Bootheel district.
9.
Desmet-relatively invisible of late, but young and eager to compete
well. They will appear this week at the Jesuit Invitational.
10
Marquette-the Mustangs are led by sophomore Jeffries who is quite the
athlete. His work at Hancock was impressive. He also finished in the
top five at Central earlier in the week. He has a better cast around
him than in the past. Look for Marquette to make its mark in the state
series.

SOUTH WINS WARRIOR INVITATIONAL
Posted Friday, September 27,2002, 11:39PM by Jim Schmuck
For
the third consecutive year, South won the Warrior Invitational hosted
by Fox. The Patriots were victors on both the varsity and the junior
varsity levels and competed well on the freshman/sophomore level.
The
varsity race was made a bit more difficult than anticipated due to the
loss of John to some minor surgery, which put him down for this meet.
It will be at least Monday before he is back with us. We also found it
necessary to work without Kevin midway through the race. He was not
well prior to the start and, while he gave it a go, he just wasn't
well. I told him to step off at about 3000 meters.
Josh had been
lifted up to take John's spot and ran very well. He provided good
security for the varsity and ran well enough that if we had lost our
first man's services, we still would have won the meet.
As it
was, Tim led the team throughout the race. Early on, he was the point
man. The rest keyed on him to get themselves into the race. Ben was
particularly good at getting to Tim and working with him. Ben's race
was very good. He was in the front group from start to finish. Kirk
continues to run very well. These two freshmen compete beyond
expectation.
Brad was systematic in his efforts. He was never
far off of his teammates and filled the number four role this week. His
finish was strong and committed. Raca put himself in good position
early and continued to work to keep South in solid and safe area. Josh
fulfilled his role as security man. The excellent work of these three
people took the load off of Kevin.
Junior Varsity
The jv
continues to strike hard at the front of the pack. Steve and Chase took
this group out at a blistering pace. Around the lake, the cadence and
turnover of these two was impressive. At the mid-mark they both
continued to race with strength. Evidently, there was a snafu regarding
the course late in the race that caused the top two to retrace their
steps. In the end, they finished one-two with Chase taking the honors.
Not
far off the front-runners was South's support group. David and Joey
battled with three good Seckman athletes and defeated two of the three.
By taking four of the top five places, these athletes virtually
guaranteed South the top prize. It was left to Simon Joenck to finalize
the victory. He did just that!
Several in this jv group ran good
races. Marc Olive, Jon, and Karthik to name three. I haven't checked
just yet, but Coach Faulhaber is convinced that I will be awarding a
number of IBC Awards on Monday.
Freshman/Sophomore
This
group competed well against teams that loaded up this area. Central,
for the second successive year, took their varsity sophomore and placed
him in this division. Others made similar decisions. Not to worry, the
Patriots ran very well. Corey Griffin continued his excellent racing.
Reid ran solidly. Jeff Haddock ran his best race of the year.
Considering that this was the freshman group's first 5000, they handled
the experience with aplomb. This group is very impressive. The
sophomores added some zest to this unit. Craig Boyd finished as South's
number two and Garrett Bremer was the number four. The school was
represented well by this team.
Next up for South will be the
Hazelwood East Invitational. We will have our first rematch with a team
that defeated us earlier at St. Charles. Fort Zumwalt South finished
second to SLUH at St. Charles. We will take their measure at East and
determine whether we have improved or not.

CENTRAL INVITATIONAL AFTERMATH
Posted Tuesday, September 24,2002, 7:04PM by Jim Schmuck
One
day after the Central Invitational, the junior varsity enjoyed 17 IBC
Awards for dropping into the next minute. In addition John Leicht
earned Patriot of the Week Honors.
The varsity ran very well and
packed well together. There was some concern that athletes coming off
the Homecoming Weekend would feel some fatigue, particularly among some
who had been out late at the dance. That may have been true in a case
or two, but it was not enough to help the rest of the field. Numbers
1-5 came in within 38 seconds and 2-4 were within six seconds.

Invitational champion, Fox, and runnerup Northwest. Northwest came off
of their own championship of the Stan Nelson Invitational the week
before.
The junior varsity had a stellar day at Central. Both
Josh and Chase crashed into the 17 minute area. The second half of the
race was quite a competition. Chase made a move at the tennis courts
that forced Kirkwood to surge with him or give the Pats an edge. Both
Josh and Steve LaChance went with him. From there, South took control.
They solidified their grip on the meet when both Joey Wenzel and David
Horton pushed ahead of athletes just in front of them.

VARSITY AND JV WIN AT CENTRAL
Posted Monday, September 23,2002, 9:36PM by Jim Schmuck
It
was a gorgeous day at Central. The Patriots took advantage of the
beautiful afternoon as they dominated the Central Invitational on the
varsity and the junior varsity levels. The freshmen ran very well and
packed extremely well.
VARSITY
We wanted to see Kirkwood
and anticipated that they were a pretty good team. They are! However,
the Pats put a very good run together and put real pressure on the
Pioneers. At the mile mark the top ten or twelve runners wore red
singlets. Five were from South, five from Kirkwood and a couple from
Central. From the mile on, the Patriots put distance between themselves
and Pioneers.
Billy Bell ran very well on his home course. Tim
ran right behind him for the last half of the race. Tim was followed in
close order by the surprise of the day, John Leicht, who ran his best
race to date. Kevin and Kirk worked hard to hold their places in the
top five. Ben filled out the top five with his eighth place finish.
Brad and Raca finished the roll call for the Patriots with top fifteen
finishes.
Top three scores were: South 22; Kirkwood 63; Marquette 87
JUNIOR VARSITY
The
junior varsity did the varsity one better. They won with a score of 21.
Josh ran to the championship in 17:56, followed closely by Chase
Bohling in 17:58. Steve, Joey and David filled out South's top five and
finished within the meet's top ten.
FRESHMAN
The
freshmen were led by Corey Griffin. This group placed its 2-5 within 13
seconds. This is remarkable for a freshman group. They have the makings
of a solid team.
Times will be posted on the cross country board first thing in the morning. IBC's will be awarded at practice.
TOP TEN OF THE WEEK SEPTEMBER 22
Posted Sunday, September 22,2002, 3:58PM by Jim Schmuck
The
variety of meets included the Edwardsville Invitational, including
several north county teams, the Cape Central Invitational with Fox and
Northwest and the Hazelwood Central Invitational. It should have
included the Central Invitational, but we will have to wait for
Monday's run.
At Hazelwood Central, Fort Zumwalt South finished
second to Lee's Summit. SLUH ran a second unit, but will have to
relinquish the top spot to those who beat them this week. They finished
8th at Hazelwood.
Fox wins the Cape Central Invitational and
continues where they finished off last season. They ran strong in
October and into the state championships. South will see them Friday at
Fox's home invitational. Northwest added a second place finish at Cape
to their championship of a week ago.
Pattonville was the top area finisher at Edwardsville, but that finish doesn't warrant admission to the top ten this week.
1. Ft. Z. South-this young group continues to gain confidence with top finishes.
2.
SLUH-sent the junior-junior Billikens to Hazelwood Central and finished
8th. This week they will contest the Hancock Invitational.
3.
Chaminade-if they ran this week, it didn't show up on the radar. They
are still a bit suspect, but will have an opportunity to prove
themselves as the season progresses. If they compete at Hancock, they
will test themselves at the large school level and will get a good
snapshot of their abilities. Look for Buha to run well.
4. Kirkwood-the Pioneers await the Central Invitational and a piece of the Patriots.
5.
Fox-defending Suburban South champions and current Cape Central
Invitational champions. They host the Warrior Invitational Friday.
6. Desmet-Spartans were not evident this week.
7. NWHS-Northwest finished 2nd at Cape and continues to run well.
8. Central-hosts their own meet on Monday.
9. Eureka-competes at Central on Monday.
10 Marquette-expected at Central.

SOUTH ALUMS SHINE AT MARYVILLE INVITATIONAL
Posted Saturday, September 21,2002, 1:36PM by Jim Schmuck
South
alums ran extremely well at the Maryville Invitational Saturday
morning. Maggie and Maureen Conley both finished in the top five of the
12 team meet. Principia looked pretty solid, but after that Maryville
looked good.
On the men's side, Vince Kruse also finished in
the top five as he ran before a large crowd of South and Kirkwood cross
country members.
Kirkwood's cross country team was there to
watch alums run for both Maryville and Westminster. Westminster still
hangs in there with a cross country squad.
CENTRAL INVITATIONAL RESCHEDULED FOR MONDAY

The
Maryville Invitational takes place on Saturday morning on the

Kruse.
Several current members of the Patriot team will be in attendance.
Good luck to our alums.
CENTRAL INVITATIONAL POSTPONED
Posted Thursday, September 19,2002, 7:24PM by Jim Schmuck
The
Central Invitational succumbed to the rains and some thunder this
afternoon. There was really no choice left to the meet management when
the thunder rumbled through. The rains also made portions of the course
questionable. The area behind the tennis courts would have been very
slick and difficult for athletes to negotiate.
On a positive
note, the athletes were awfully good about the whole situation. They
were upbeat and prepared to compete in the rain.
Central will
make a decision by about 10 am tomorrow whether to attempt to run the
meet on Friday or Monday or not at all. When I get that information, I
will post it on the cross country bulletin board in the English hallway.

South
is the defending champion in this meet. Among the teams who are likely
to attend are conference opponents Eureka, Webster Groves, North,
University City, Summit and Oakville. District opponents include
Eureka, Summit, Marquette, Kirkwood, Lafayette and West.
The
course has been slightly altered due to construction and is likely to
be a little tight in the first 6-800 meters. The rains should have
helped to soften the ground a bit.
PATRIOTS TRAVEL TO CENTRAL INVITATIONAL THURSDAY
Posted Sunday, September 15,2002, 3:13PM by Jim Schmuck
South
travels to Central on Thursday to defend the championship that they won
a year ago. Friday the Patriots defended their Quad championship.
Scoring 19 points, South overwhelmed the other three schools. On
Thursday, they will contest against top ten teams Kirkwood, Eureka and
Marquette. Kirkwood has gathered quite a stable of young athletes
together. It will be interesting to see how they have developed.
The
freshmen will open up the invitational with their race commencing at
4:15. The remainder of the time schedule will be printed early in the
week.
PATRIOTS OF THE WEEK

Joshua Lockwood-Parkway Quad Champion on the junior varsity level.

TOP TEN OF THE WEEK SEPTEMBER 15
Posted Sunday, September 15,2002, 3:06PM by Jim Schmuck
Top
area teams were spread out over the state this weekend. Some are still
invisible, but that will end by the end of this week. The Quad,
Missouri Invitational and the McCluer North Invitational were the major
events. MICDS held a small school event that included class 4
Chaminade. Kirkwood and north county teams are still unaccounted for.
The Central Invitational and the Hazelwood Central Invitational should
call out Kirkwood and the north county. SLUH, Fort Zumwalt South and
Chaminade won championships. Jeff City, outside the area, improved with
the addition of DJ Wolking. Lee's Summit is a bit of a mystery with
their finish at MU, however, it is normal for Lee's Summit to split
squads which would explain that effort. Northwest won their own
invitational and may be a sleeper. They defeated Eureka.
TOP TEN
1. SLUH-wins the MU Invitational handily over Jeff City and Lee's Summit. The Junior Billikens put four athletes in the top 10.
2.
Ft. Z. South-a young team wins the 30 team McCluer North Invitational.
A pretty confident group. The Pats will meet this team at Hazelwood
East.
3. Chaminade-winning the MICDS Invitational, a meet that
remains a remnant of their small school days. Buha continues to shine.
4. Desmet-travelled to Blue Springs and found a hornet's nest of good teams.
5. Kirkwood-still unknown, but will unveil that great promise this week at the Central Invitational.
6. Northwest-Win their own Stan Nelson Invitational. Are they awakening the ghosts of past great Northwest teams?
7. St. Charles West-another team with young talent. Ran well at St. Charles Invitational and finished third at McCluer North.
8.
Eureka-after a close loss to Central last week, they finish a close
second to Northwest. The Patriots can expect to see them at Central on
Thursday.
9. Marquette-the Mustangs are just beginning to put it
together. Another very fine run by Garrett Jeffries. They will be at
Central.
10 CBC-finished 5th at MU and continue to put their grouping together.
Worth mentioning: Central, West, Francis Howell North, Francis Howell Central, Lafayette
Dropped out of last week's 10: Lindbergh, West and Central
Three of the top ten can be expected to compete at the Central Invitational.

SOUTH WINS QUAD
Posted Friday, September 13,2002, 11:14PM by Jim Schmuck
The
Patriots travelled only a short distance to Queeny Park for the
twenty-fifth Parkway Quad. South won its thirteenth varsity victory
with the largest winning margin in the history of the meet. The junior
varsity shut out the field and the only thing that kept the Patriots
from sweeping the championships was a mishap at the end of the freshman
race that led South's race leader off the course.
VARSITY
South
took on a solid Central squad led by area stalwart Billy Bell and a
dangerous West squad led by Brett Murry. Even the North squad showed
more spirit than a year ago. Tim Levine, Kevin John, Jeff Misuraca,
Brad Kuntzman, John Leicht, Ben Brammeier and Kirk Chitwood represented
the Patriots on a sunny and dusty afternoon.
South showed good
effort to work together. Tim became the second Levine to win the
championship. He ran a smart race and made good use of tactics to
capture first place. Ben and Kirk ran well in their inaugural varsity
competitions. John and Brad battled each other into the chute. It
turned out to be a pretty complete domination of the sister schools of
Parkway.
It was nice to see former West coach Dale Shepherd and the return of the once and present North coach Rod Reed.
Final score:
South 19
Central 58
West 62
North 92
Records
included the 39 point margin of victory. Also Tim's win gives South 11
individual champions, more than any of the other three schools. The
13th team victory is the most of any of the schools.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The
junior varsity was completely dominant. South finished 1-5 in scoring a
perfect 15. Joshua Lockwood defended his championship of a year ago
after racing extremely well with teammate Chase Bohling. Only in the
last part of the race did Josh pull away. Steve LaChance raced very
well. Joey Wenzel continues to shake the rust off from both nine months
away from running and a full summer that included little sustained
training. His race today was very effective. Simon Joenck performed in
his second cross country race and did just that; he raced. Several
other jv athletes performed quite well. They included Kyle McCommis and
his hurdling teammate Jon Simons. Quinn Garcia had a good day. Others
worked hard to maintain team racing integrity. Their close times
indicated that they succeeded.

was at or near the front from beginning to end. He raced very well.
Reid Garcia and Andrew Leicht took their jobs seriously and put
themselves to the test. In fact, the whole freshman group made it clear
that they had come to compete. They put themselves in position to win
the team championship and in coming weeks are likely to benefit from
that winning mindset.

Overall
it was a very exciting and successful day. The Quad is one of our goal
meets. We measure the success of our season by our efforts in this
meet. Today's efforts were exquisite. The athletes should be proud of
their efforts.

Friday's
Quad will take place at Queeny Park off of Weidman Road. The start and
finish are on the zoysia fields below the tennis courts. It will be the
inaugural race for our freshman squad who are anxious to get their
season started. The schedule of races are:
4:15 Boys' Freshman
4:17 Girls' Freshman/Sophomore
4:45 Girls' Varsity
5:15 Boys' Varsity
5:45 Girls' Junior Varsity
6:15 Boys' Junior Varsity
Last
year's champions included the Boys' varsity, junior varsity and
freshmen. The girls' varsity and junior varsity also won. This is the
first year in over ten years that the Quad has included both the boys
and the girls together at the same site.

TOP TEN WEEK ONE
Posted Sunday, September 8,2002, 11:23AM by Jim Schmuck
We
finally had a chance to see some teams as the season opened with the
St. Charles Invitational. A good field that included Columbia Hickman,
Jeff City and area powers SLUH, Desmet and Fort Zumwalt South kicked
off the season. Next week's McCluer North and Northwest meets and our
own Quad should expose the other solid teams in the eastern Missouri
area. For the present, however, here is a snapshot of this week's top
ten.
1. SLUH--the jr. Billikens are no surprise. Well coached,
well-packed with a 1-5 gap of 38 seconds. Already a handful for the
area to deal with.
2. Ft. Z. South--Last year's sophomore
phenoms have not disappointed. They opened at St. Charles with a solid
second place over Jeff City and others. They have youth on their side
and a hall of fame coach.
3. Chaminade--Last year's 3A state
champs are for real. Buha is impressive. While they will not match last
year's heights amongst the bigs, they will enjoy plenty of success.
4.
Desmet--The Spartans have taken a step back in the early season to
reload with underclassmen after several years of dominating teams. Give
them a few weeks and they will be set for the rugged MCC and the state
series.
5. Kirkwood--still under wraps, but with talent to burn hoarded over the past two seasons.
6. Marquette--Improved over a year ago despite the loss of Irwin. Young Jeffries is a solid figure to build around.
7.
Lindbergh--Another team still preparing. Their promise over the past
two falls coupled with their superb track work suggests quite a season.
8.
CBC--The Cadets will need some time to replace their top two guns of a
year ago. They have the system down pat and will be a factor in coming
weeks.
9. West--Always tough, the Longhorns will rely on the veteran Murry to carry them early as Coach Tobey puts this group together.
10.
Central--Billy Bell is all the rage and for good reason. He wins a
shortened dual with Eureka and Tony Payton. Next stop, the Quad!
Worth mentioning--Francis Howell Central and McCluer North
The
coming week is a powerful one for many of the teams in the area.
McCluer North stages its invitational. South is the defending champion,
but will be contesting its crown in the Quad for supremacy of the
Parkway District. Northwest will also take place with traditional teams
from the south.
JUNIOR VARSITY RUNS WELL AT ST. CHARLES
Posted Saturday, September 7,2002, 11:27PM by Jim Schmuck
Sorry about the delay on the jv, but I am having some computer problems tonight.
The
junior varsity athletes did a very nice job. First of all, they looked
very nice in their new shorts. We still have some cleaning up to do on
a couple of uniforms and some educating to do on the rules regarding
jewelry and other accessories. All of those are considered illegal. We
must clean that up. When we can least afford it, we will suffer if we
try to sneak by. Leave all of that at home.
None of the jv
athletes suffered unduly by the heat, indicating that they had prepared
well and consistently. It also indicated that they had prepared fluid
intake during adequately.
Several jv performances were
noteworthy. Marc Olive ran a strong 3200 meters. Ben, John and Kirk
performed well in the 5000. We were a little passive in the early
stages of the race. Several of the athletes mentioned that to me. Being
cautious in 90 degree heat has its merits, but athletes should also be
willing to compete and not just run. Many of you competed quite well.
Some were content to run. Friday in the Quad, more will asked of you.
Friday
all eligible athletes will compete in the Quad. South is the defending
champion on all three divisions. In fact, the varsity has only lost the
Quad one time in the past eight years. Central looks at this year as
their best opportunity to win the Quad in recent memory. West would
like to return to the summit they last enjoyed in 1999. This meet is
the first of the three goals we have set for this fall. I look forward
to contesting with the other three schools for supremacy of the Parkway
District.
PATRIOTS OF THE WEEK
Kevin John--ran a very solid first race of the season.
Chase Bohling--was extremely competent in his first varsity race.
ST. CHARLES A SUCCESS
Posted Saturday, September 7,2002, 8:20PM by Jim Schmuck
The
St. Charles Invitational lived up to its expectation as a hot and
rugged first test for the Patriots in the 2002 season. This team has a
different make-up than recent teams for South. The first meet tested
that senior-laden make-up and they responded quite well. The meet
brought a host of fine teams from mid-Missouri and the St. Louis area.
SLUH ran their typical pack 'em in style and did a nice job in winning
this first contest. After the "boys in blue," the race was pretty
tight. Zumwalt South possesses quite a talented group of juniors and
Jeff City perennially finds good athletes to compete in cross country.
Both did a good job at this meet.
The Patriots finished in the
fourth spot and ran very effectively. Kevin was consistent and solid up
front. He put himself in good position and raced throughout. Tim used a
more tactical race plan, which worked very effectively for him in the
92 degree heat. Brad ran a steady race and turned in that very reliable
performance that makes him so valuable. Raca got a little excited early
in the heat of the afternoon and paid a price, however, his experience
showed in his ability to adjust to his early pace and avoid that
precarious drop that can come from early race over-exubriance. Chase
ran with a competitive spirit that has been developing for years. He
was asked to compete in the upper third of the field and actually did
better than his team goal responsibility. Joshua ran satisfactorily. He
is adjusting to the intensity of varsity competition which is most
evident in the first 500 meters and the last 500 meters. He was a
little timid at the start, but raced well within the 4000 meter box.
David thought that he had prepared adequately for the heat and possible
dehydration. His mind told him that he had taken sufficient fluids. His
body suggested otherwise. The cramps became an insurmountable problem.
He will be wise to take in good fluids over the weekend.
A first
meet performance with three neophyte varsity athletes, one had to be
pleased. Good competitiveness against a solid field and a fourth place
finish out of some 20+ teams. We are like that proverbial figure
mentioned by Twain who realized that he knew a whole lot more about
life after he had grabbed the tail of that tiger. We have work to do
and we must intesify our efforts, however, it is worth the effort
because the talent and the desire exists with this group.

WEEK THREE ENDS
Posted Saturday, August 31,2002, 9:37PM by Jim Schmuck
Coach
Faulhaber felt that he had the best second week in years with the
freshmen. He is very excited with the number of athletes and the
quality of people who are working for him.
The poor physical
nature of the park has created some significant problems for all of us.
This week partially solves that problem--the park is closed as they
prepare for Manchester Days. In the long run, the park will probably
provide a good home for us again in a year or so, but this year will be
a trial.
The jv group has been working better than I remember.
They have been improving daily. The varsity is working through the
difficulty of acclimating to the load required, but they show some real
promise. We have a couple of athletes suffering from the pounding of a
drought-ridden surface and the moon-scape of the park. Hopefully rest
and ice will improve their situations. We also found a few sets of flat
feet. They often create lower leg difficulties for athletes as they
begin to accumulate mileage.
We begin the season on Friday with the St. Charles Invitational.
SECOND WEEK ENDS WITH FRESHMAN COOKOUT
Posted Saturday, August 24,2002, 7:39PM by Jim Schmuck
The
second week was particularly successful in recruiting freshmen. Roughly
20 freshmen have arrived to become a part of the cross country team.
They are a particularly good looking group with a good personality.
They will enjoy the season and we are going to enjoy them. In addition,
the early indication is that they will also be a talented group. Over
the next four years they will add to the history of this team.
On
the whole, the weather and the early start of school diminished the
quantity of miles for the week. We also took advantage of the Queeny
Park and the Castlewood Park to get on the grass. It cost us some
mileage, but provided some running that will be somewhat limited due to
the construction at the Schroeder Park.
At this point we have about 50 athletes on the squad. They are listed below by class.

2002 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE IS UP!

PRE-SEASON TOP TEN
Posted Sunday, August 18,2002, 7:23PM by Jim Schmuck
During
the pre-season everyone has aspirations of grandeur. Some teams come
off of a storied past and expect that to carry them forward. Some are
building off of young athletes who show great promise. Some return
excellent units who will be factors at the state level. Some primary
team goals rest with district championships or conference
championships. Others look for District and Sectional wins. Many hope
to qualify for the state championship meet and a few look toward a
trophy at the state meet. Here is the first top ten of the season.
1.
Desmet--The Spartans took a trophy in 2001 and continue to reload
effectively year after year. Another Eicholz on the scene and ample
reinforcements make the Jesuits a cut above the rest in St. Louis.
2.
Ft. Z. South--This team was primarily made up of sophomores last year.
As juniors this season, they will show more strength and will be
difficult to beat. They ought to win their conference and contest at
the state level.
3. SLUH--A perennial power since the advent of
Coach Linhares. SLUH loses some fire-power from the 2001 squad, but has
shown over the past decade that if you paint yourself blue enough, you
can run effectively for the Jr. Bills. This group will dominate many
meets and will battle Desmet for dominance in their conference.
4.
Kirkwood--Over the past two seasons, the Pioneers have stockpiled solid
freshmen and sophomores. Those young harriers will definitely be a
factor in the metro area this fall. It has been awhile since the red
and white has run roughshod over the area, but this will be a big
season for Coach Baldwin's minions.
5. CBC--Once this member of
the Catholic school conference recognized the formula of success, they
have put together a very nice run. They must replace some stellar
athletes, but are blessed with committed student-athletes who want
success for the Cadets. They will suffer in comparison to Desmet and
SLUH, but will be very difficult for the rest of the area to deal with.
6.
Chaminade--Last year's 3A state champions are on the cusp. If the Red
Devils can remain in Division 3, they may even contest for a repeat
title. Whether they will have to move up to Division 4 due to increased
enrollment of smaller schools or the new 1.35 formula or can remain
below with an impending restraining order gives new era feeling to high
school cross country. If they are Division 4 they will be powerful, but
not dominating.
7. Fox--The Warriors were conference champions
and state qualifiers last year. They did that with good upperclassmen,
which hid the fact that they had an excellent freshman/sophomore team.
They will not be one-year wonders. It will be a barn-burner for the
Suburban West Conference this year.
8. Eureka--Coach Kimball's
group will be overshadowed by their distaff teammates, but they will
have talent and will be a strong factor in the area this fall. They are
another team on the Division 3/4 cutting edge. It may be October before
they know whether they are in the larger or smaller class. Their status
may be influenced by private school concerns and legal efforts.
9.
West-Coach Tobey begins his second year as the chief steer. He must
replace his all-stater, but has an excellent number one to build
around. It has been nearly two decades since the Longhorns failed to
compete at state. They appear to be a staple at that meet.
10.
McCluer North--The Stars showed some real quality in the spring. If
they can transition that quality into the fall, they will be a
significant power in the area. The Suburban North has not had a
significant member of the area top ten in some time. The Stars should
fill that role this fall.
FIRST WEEK COMES TO AN END
Posted Sunday, August 18,2002, 3:23PM by Jim Schmuck
The
first week ended with upperclassmen calling freshmen. The new
construction at South caused a glitch when the phones were shut down
during our efforts, but many took the lists home and called from there.
We will see how they did come Monday evening.
The first week is
always hectic. The weather was good, but the park is like a moonscape.
It will be a challenge to workout in the park with any consistency.
Many
of the upperclassmen have come back in pretty good shape, but our work
is cut out for us. We have a mix of returning lettermen and youngsters.
Even our seniors will use the season to grow into their roles.
The following athletes have reported into practice:
SENIORS
Chase Bohling
Quinn Garcia
David Horton
Simon Joenk
Kevin John
Tim Levine
Josh Lockwood
Kyle McCommis
Jeff Misuraca
Karthik Ponnusamy
Ryan Veatch
JUNIORS
Matt Hollander
Brad Kuntzman
Steve LaChance
Erik Nordlor
Marc Olive
Jon Simons
Greg Thompson
Alex Ulrich
Mat Welch
SOPHOMORES
Craig Boyd
Garrett Bremer
John Leicht
Greg Rolf
John Strategier
Brian Serniak
This
week coming will be busy. We have an early opening of school and spirit
night on Thursday. Friday practice will include the drug awareness
meeting and will be followed by the annual cookout for the freshmen. In
addition, we need to continue to prepare for the first meet for
upperclassmen at St. Charles on September 6.
FRESHMEN BEGIN MONDAY, AUGUST 19
Posted Sunday, August 18,2002, 11:51AM by Jim Schmuck
Freshmen
will come into practice on Monday, August 19 at 6 pm at Schroeder Park.
Upperclass team members have been calling in-coming freshmen, but have
been slowed by construction at South. Construction people shut down the
phones on Thursday evening. Athletes took the numbers home and called
from their own homes to invite these new Patriots to become part of our
athletic family.
We expect some younger brothers of current and
former athletes to appear this week. If we did not get ahold of you and
you are interested, know that we are very anxious to have you with us
and that we will take care of you to teach you how to become a cross
country athlete.
The 2002 schedule should be appearing on this site within a day or so.
PRACTICE BEGINS
Posted Sunday, August 4,2002, 11:26AM by Jim Schmuck
The
2002 cross country season will begin for UPPERCLASS ATHLETES on Monday,
August 12 at Paul Schroeder Park at 6 pm in the evening. You must have
a current physical and an emergency card to participate. If you need a
physical form this week, pick one up in the SOUTHWEST MIDDLE SCHOOL
OFFICE.
FRESHMEN will begin practice on Monday, August 19 at
Paul Schroeder Park at 6 pm in the evening. All freshmen must have a
physical to participate. If you need a form, see one of the coaches at
Paul Schroeder Park during the week of August 12-16 at 6-6:30. If you
cannot get a physical prior to August 19, attend practice to receive
information, but you will not be able to actually participate until
your physical is completed and turned into the coach.
Upperclass
athletes will attempt to call incoming freshmen late in the week of
August 12 to invite them to practice. If you are a freshmen and do not
get a call, COME ANYWAY. We will try to call everyone, but many are
away when we call.
We look forward to a good season with several
returning athletes and a squad that appears deeper in overall talent
than recent years. As many as 12-15 athletes may vie for varsity
positions. The junior varsity looks strong as well.
Returning
seniors include Tim Levine, Kevin John, Josh Lockwood, David Horton,
Jeff Misuraca, Chase Bohling, Adam Schaeffer and, of course, that one
guy whom I failed to mention.
Coaches Faulhaber, Timmons and Schmuck look forward to seeing all of you in the near future.
DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS!!
CASEY REID AND HOLLY SCHULTE MARRIED
Posted Sunday, August 4,2002, 11:14AM by Jim Schmuck
Former
cross country and track athlete Casey Reid married the former Holly
Schulte Friday evening. The two were planning a honeymoon in the
Pacific Northwest.
Casey was a four-year member of the Patriot
Cross Country team and a contributing member of South top ten state
teams in the late nineties.
Both Casey and Holly were students in the Great Works of the Western World course. They will reside in Manchester.
